The Pittsburgh Technology Leaders Group explores the topic of decision making & organizational politics.
Topic/ Purpose of Meeting:
Politics stem from a diversity of interests, and those competing interests must be resolved in some way. “Rational” decision making alone may not work when interests are fundamentally incongruent, so political behaviors and influence tactics arise.
Although often portrayed negatively, organizational politics and interpersonal relationships are a part of organizational life. They are often informal, unofficial, and sometimes behind-the-scenes efforts to sell ideas, influence decisions, or achieve other targeted objectives. Oftentimes decisions, large and small, are driven by these organizational forces.
This discussion will focus on the elements of organizational politics, how they are involved in decision making and how to better understand and work within the politics around you.
