Net Zero Innovation : (Steel) Boston Metal, US Steel & CMU

Please join the Pittsburgh Technology Council for our new event series on Net Zero Innovation. These sessions are opportunities for PTC members to learn about and engage with leaders in environmentally sustainable technology with regard to lowering emissions.

Our very first Net Zero Innovation discussion will be on the topic of the steel industry. Our experts will share insights on ways to lower emissions in steel production and explore opportunities for innovation in this market.

Our featured guests include:

Brenda Petrilena joined U. S. Steel in 2017 and currently serves as the Director of Business Development, responsible to identify growth opportunities and develop partnerships aligned with U. S. Steel’s long-term sustainability and decarbonization strategy.  Prior to her current role, Petrilena led the development and implementation of project management standards, processes, tools, and the utilization of continuous improvement methodologies to enable stabilization of assets and successful project portfolio execution.  She is also Vice President of U. S. Steel’s SteelPRIDE Employee Resource Group, accountable to bring together and ensure dignity, respect, and inclusivity for members of the LGBTQ+ community along with their allies.

-Tadeu Carneiro, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at Boston Metal
As part of Breakthrough Energy Ventures' portfolio, Boston Metal has invented a coal-free, emissions free, modular method of industrial steel production using electricity. Its technology will revolutionize steel manufacturing (steel manufacture is responsible for more than 9% of all CO2 emissions in the globe). The company is a global metals technology solutions company that is commercializing molten oxide electrolysis (MOE), a patented tonnage metals production platform. MOE provides the metals industry with a more efficient, lower cost, and greener solution for the production of a wide variety of metals and alloys from a wide variety of feedstocks.

-Petrus Christiaan Pistorius, POSCO Professor and Co-Director of the Center for Iron and Steelmaking Research at Carnegie Mellon University
The Center for Iron and Steelmaking Research (CISR) is a research center within the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. Their work is devoted to education and research related to ironmaking, steelmaking, and metals processing.  The Center is supported by steel companies and suppliers. Researchers in the Center are graduate and undergraduate student researchers as well as visitors from academia and industry.
